REMEMBER – FREQUENTLY CHECK THE BLACK FILING CABINET IN THE GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT FOR NEW SCHOLARSHIPS. THEY ARRIVE EVERY DAY. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SEARCH FOR THEM. IMPORTANT – WE FREQUENTLY REMIND YOU TO WRITE “THANK YOU” NOTES IF YOU RECEIVE A SCHOLARSHIP OR SOMEONE WRITES YOU A RECOMMENDATION LETTER. LAST YEAR, FIVE STUDENTS RECEIVED $1,000.00 FROM A GRADUATING LEHS CLASS, AND THE CLASS DECIDED TO RENEW THE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THREE OF THE FIVE STUDENTS. THE REASON THE OTHER TWO STUDENTS ARE NOT HAVING THEIR SCHOLARSHIPS RENEWED IS BECAUSE THEY COULDN’T BOTHER TO WRITE A “THANK YOU” NOTE. ALWAYS WRITE “THANK YOU” NOTES. FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) – Student should file as soon as possible after January 1, 2008. They are encouraging you to file on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov; also available online in Spanish.
In order to be considered for Financial Assistance, it is suggested that Seniors check the scholarship board daily, and meet the deadlines and qualifications as specified on the individual scholarship applications.

For more information about the above scholarships, and other scholarships see the Scholarship Board in the Guidance Office. As more scholarships are made available a new list will be updated.

Happenings in the Science Department

The Science Department is off to a great start this school year. A new course in Biotechnology is being offered as an elective to upperclassmen. Fifteen students are currently enrolled in this new course. LEHS is exploring an articulation agreement with North Shore Community College where students who complete the course and pass a competency exam may earn college credit if they enroll at NSCC. A room has been outfitted specifically for that class with equipment donated by Alexandria Equities. Alexandria Equities was instrumental in LEHS obtaining over $100,000 in supplies, equipment, and furniture. Desks, chairs, filing cabinets, and shelving were given to the Social Studies, ROTC, Drama, Band, and Guidance as well as the Science Dept.

The Science Department obtained 3 Hardscrabble Grants from the Essex County Community Fund. One grant purchased a Smart board for a chemistry classroom. Another grant purchased laptop computers that will be used to enhance the multimedia projectors from last year’s Hardscrabble grant. The last grant purchased a spectrophotometer, electronic balances, and some additional supplies. The Essex County Community Fund has been generous in supplementing the equipment and supply budget for the past 3 years. The equipment and supplies greatly enhances instruction in science.

The class of 2010, this year’s current 10th graders, is the first class that will be required to pass the Science MCAS in order to earn a high school diploma. The Biology curriculum has been revised to assist students in preparing for the Biology MCAS exam this June. Many of our upperclassmen are electing to take 2 sciences concurrently.

Develop Your Speaking Skills

Is your son or daughter a talented speaker?  Let your kid’s big mouth do some good for once! All English High students are invited to join the Lions Club speech contest.  They can improve their skills, tell colleges that they participated, and possibly win over $2000. This year's speech topic is, "How Can My Generation Contribute to the World They Will Inherit?"  Students write a one-minute speech and say it on stage in the LEHS auditorium.  They can get coaching from Mrs. Mazzarella in Room 150, any day during homeroom or after school.

The best freshmen speakers will win up to $100.  The best older speakers can win $2500 by moving up to the citywide contest, and possibly to other cities and to the state finals.  There are six levels of competition, one every month or two.  The school contest will be held at 3:00, and higher levels take about an hour in the evening.

For four of the past six years, a Lynn student has made it to the statewide finals and won over $2000.  Your child may be the next winner!

She graduated from high school in France and is attending Lynn English High School as a senior.  In addition to her mother and father, her family in France consists of two brothers and a sister. Sophie hopes to continue her education and study Law when she returns to France.  Her interests outside of school are theatre, tennis, golf and jogging.  While in the USA, she will be living with her host family, Holly & William Brauner, their daughter Alison, a sophomore at LEHS and son Curtis.
