General Class Information

Course Description:
  • Chemistry I: This is the study of fundamental concepts of matter, energy, and chemical changes. The major areas studied are atomic theory, chemical bonding, chemical recactivity, writing and balancing equations, stoichiometry, acids and bases, gas laws, electrochemistry, redox reactions, and nuclear chemistry. Most of these topics will be covered in laboratory investigations or experiments allowing the student to supply many ideas of chemistry. Book used: Modern Chemistry by, Holt, Rinehart and Winston (1993)

Course Goals
  1. Students will improve skills in applying the methodologies of the scientific method and experimental design; improve skills in scientific tools and instrumentation, in measuring, gathering data, accurately calculating, and in communicating that data in a clear, concise format.
  2. Students will develop the ability to analyze (draw informtion from data and derive conclusions or infrences based upon data and explain scientific data presented in graphic format.
  3. Students will develop a through understanding of the periodic table, its relationship to atomic structure, properties, reactivity, and its usefullness in predicting the behavior under various conditions.
  4. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the Kinetic Theory of Matter by its application in explaining phase changes, chemical kinetics, and the relationship between temperature, volume, and kinetic energy of gas molecules.
  5. Students will apply the laws of Conservation of Matter and energy of qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the chemical interactions of matter.
  6. Students will recognize the properties of matter and the interactions of matter are dependent upon the structure of atoms and their valence electron configurations.
