General Class Information

Course Description:
  • This lecture/lab-oriented course places its main emphasis on the chemical makeup of the earth, mineral identification, rock identification, layers of the atmosphere, and plat tectonics. Other topics include oceanography, marine topography, topographic maps, and the earth's relationship to the universe. Books used: Heath Earth Science by McDougal Littell (1994) and Earth Science by Namowitz and Spaulding (1989)

Course Goals
  1. Students will be able to observe and assess the condition of the environment around them.
  2. Students will be able to understand that they have the power to positively on negatively affect their own environment.
  3. Students will be able to obtain knowledge enabling them to make informed intelligent decisions affecting their immediate and global communities
  4. Students will be able to understand and visualize the concept of convection currents and how they influence and shape the world around us.
  5. Students will be able to have a scientific awareness and knowledge of the world around them: the ground they walk on, the air they breath, and the water they drink.
  6. Students will be able to understand the relationship of the earth to the rest of the universe.
  7. Students will be able to be safety conscious in the performance of their performance of tasks
  8. Students will be able to design and perform their own experiments: choose a topic, form a hypothesis, produce an equipment lis, develop a procedure that will produce necessary data, formulate a conclusion based on data collected, and modify original hypothesis as necessary.
  9. Students will be able to work collaboratively applying the scientific method.
