Lynn English awarded $10G by Intel Corp.

LYNN - Superintendent Catherine Latham and representatives from Lynn English High School were honored by the Intel Corporation in Washington, D.C. this week. The team from Lynn was on hand to accept the 2009 Intel Schools of Distinction Award, which LEHS and five other U.S. Schools were recognized for at an awards reception as outstanding examples of leaders in preparing tomorrow's innovators.

Intel sponsors the Schools of Distinction Awards to honor schools for implementing innovative math and science programs and serving as models for other schools. The Intel Foundation and sponsoring companies will distribute to this year's winning schools a total of more than $1.3 million in cash, products and services.

According to Intel, Lynn English was selected because its learning environment challenges students to assume active roles as self-directed learners, with teachers functioning in the capacity of "coaches," providing guidance and direction. High performance and test scores are the direct result of the school's strong commitment to a student-centered, technology driven learning environment.

All LEHS students complete algebra, geometry and, in addition, enroll in a variety of mathematics courses, ranging in skill level from college prep to honors. Students are also given the opportunity to select courses in biotechnology, computer-aided design and drafting, or technology certification programs within the Cisco Networking Academy. Close community engagements have produced new mathematics and technology programs, offered additional professional development opportunities and created internships that incite students to be self-directed and confident, utilize their 21st Century skills and take ownership of their learning in a real-life environment.

English received $2,500 when it was named a finalist in April and received another $10,000 from the Intel Foundation this week. The school will also be given an award package valued at $200,000 that includes curriculum materials, professional development resources, hardware and software prizes and services from sponsors. “It is critical for U.S. schools to invest in math and science education," said Shelly Esque, vice president, Legal and Corporate Affairs director, Corporate Affairs Group. "Because education is the foundation for innovation, the schools recognized as Intel Schools of Distinction are performing valuable services that will open doors to unprecedented opportunities for their students."

Awards for mathematics excellence at the elementary, middle school and high school levels, respectively, went to: Lynn English, Cedar Park Elementary School of Trumann, Ark, and Urban Assembly for Applied Math and Science, Bronx, N.Y.

The winning schools in mathematics offer their students a rigorous, challenging and engaging program that teaches mathematics skills and how to apply them to solve real-life problems, approach projects as a member of a team and communicate succinctly on the subject.
